Roman mortaria were shallow bowls with curved rims, grit-embedded interiors for grinding sauces and wide pouring lips. I was interested in exploring these features, not for recreating the original or producing functional objects, but for meditating on form and function.
BLAS Pontio presents a project that has captured the wonderful community of Hirael, with support from Storiel. Film-maker Gwion Aled Williams and photographer Iolo Penri, have visited Hirael numerous times over the past year, getting a glimpse of the community and the people who live there.

Etchings. Lithographs and Wood Engravings by Brangwyn from the Bangor University Collection. Born in Bruges, Brangwyn lived and worked in the UK as an illustrator, painter, muralist, designer of furniture, textiles and ceramics. Brangwyn was also a prodigiously prolific printmaker: he worked predominantly in the mediums of etching, lithography, and wood engraving. He exhibited in Britain, America and all across Europe; he was honoured by numerous institutions and bodies, was elected a member of the Royal Academy and given the first one-man exhibition of a living artist there in 1952.
As part of the National Contemporary Art Gallery Wales project, Storiel are excited to have commissioned five artworks that respond creatively to Storiel’s collections as well as contemporary art from the national collection, many of which can be seen on the Celf ar y Cyd website. The commissioned artists are Studio Cybi, Christine Mills, Audrey West, Carreg Creative and Rachel Evans. Each artist in turn, will display their work for five weeks within a display cabinet, loaned by artist Gareth Griffith which is located near the stairs on Storiel’s ground floor.
