COLLECT & KEEP

This exhibition displays some of the objects that have been received into the STORIEL collection during the past five years. The range of objects reflect the story of Gwynedd and its diverse communities with its many layers of history, economy, culture and heritage.

The Museum has been collecting since 1884 when it was part of the University College of North Wales, now Bangor University. STORIEL continues to add to its collection enabling us to interpret and understand the complete story of Gwynedd and its people ensuring it remains relevant to future generations.

The museum collection relies mainly on receiving objects, and the stories that come with them, that are generously donated by members of the public.

Our main areas of focus are:

SOCIAL HISTORY: To record and reflect the everyday life of the Gwynedd area and its communities, particularly items which are currently under-represented, such as twentieth century objects.

ARCHAEOLOGY: There is an agreement with Gwynedd Archaeological Trust to ensure that archaeological material excavated within Gwynedd will be received by Storiel.

TEXTILES: Objects relating to specific individuals, societies and events as well as those that enhance the existing collection of Welsh costume and textiles relating to Gwynedd.

FINE and DECORATIVE ART: Objects which have a particular relevance to the area that may, for example, depict a local scene, an individual or group, or been produced locally.

FURNITURE: This collection is not generally added to due to limited resources for display or storage. Exceptional examples with links to Gwynedd that may also fill in gaps in the collection may be considered.
